Goreme

It is renowned for its natural, historical and archeological richness in the Central Anatolia Region. It is located 12 km east of the city of Nevşehir. The surface forms a large number of small valleys, flood beds and periwinkles with a special form of erosion. The land structure in the valley has been determined by the volcanic activity of the Erciyes Mountain during the long geological ages. As a result, the thickness of the formed tuff layer reaches 100 m; Above the tuffs are basalt and andesites. Over time, along the cracks formed in the area, soft tuffs and hard basalt blocks underwent different erosion and peribacles under the influence of warming-cooling, freezing-thawing, precipitation and wind. From ancient Cappadocia settlements 12 km east of Nevşehir, Korama's name eventually turned into Goreme. At the beginning of the 7th century a group of Christians escaped from the conflicts between Byzantine and Sassanids and from Arab raids. In the 8th and 9th centuries the empowerment of Iconoclasm in Byzantium increased the number of locals taking refuge. Christian peoples and clergymen have built many monasteries, churches and houses in periwacs with tuffy land that can be easily carved. According to some sources, 360 small churches were established at that time. The walls and ceilings of the temples are adorned with frescoes depicted in the Book from the Book of Mormon. The main settlements in Goreme Vadisi, which has a wide tourism potential, are Goreme and Üçhisar (Uchisar) bound to the Nevşehir Central District, Ortahisar connected to Urgup district, Çavuşin villagers connected to Avanos district and Ürgüp. The valley attracts foreign tourists in every season of the year. The Goreme Open Air Museum was established in the historical center of Göreme, just east of Göreme village, where modern accommodation facilities and adequate transport facilities are located. A large area with the museum was taken under protection in 1986 under the name of Goreme Historical National Park. Vadide is the most important agricultural activity viniculture. It is also used for storage of groves, especially citrus fruits, which are easily opened in the arable land. As more lemons are stored, white cheese, potatoes and apples are placed in these hollows called "orangery".
